Online marketing is like a lucky Casino

How things have changed since the days of spending and wasting thousands on brochures and flyers in old “shout marketing” land. I knew something was wrong with that idea.
Many people still call it “spray and pray” marketing and indeed it was. Tracking results was almost impossible and any results barely covered the costs.

Then the www came along and unless anyone missed it, it got really popular very quickly. At one time in my business career I needed to make money fast. One business division was going down the pan and the other was rising very slowly. Well it took 3 attempts and I’ll cut the story short but I moved the turnover from £400k to just over £1.2M in about 3.5 years with just a website. Like I said, it did take 3 attempts and everybody got very upset with me for “wasting money” on yet another website but I got the third one correct! Woo Hoo…at last!

So why is online marketing like a casino? Well remember, it’s a “bent” casino, if you know how it works. Remember, you are only “doing marketing” or online to make money. It’s not an online vanity exercise and it’s not an online brochure. It’s a lead generation pull marketing website. It’s all about them and it’s not an opportunity to just blab on about yourself , your company, special prices or offers. That’s what everybody does and it’s a hangover from old shout marketing days.

So back to the casino….
It’s great…you can go every night with £1,000 and come back with 2 or £3,000. There is NO budget. There are NO limits. It’s about measurable results and ROI, Return on Investment. Many good online marketers play with bigger amounts
Oh really, so how do we do that then? Get a guarantee? Buy cheap and hope for the best?

The simple sensible thing to do is to just speak with people who have actually had a big online result and who have created big online results for other companies. Online is a science and a skill.
Not everyone can do it and it’s a skill like accountancy, languages, sales, retailing, farming, sport or whatever. And SEO is not a magic bolt on solution It is the core of your website and it’s just one of many online marketing tools.

Always talk to someone who has done it before. Unless you also know how the lucky casino works!
